7 Tips for Getting Set Up in a New City

Essential advice for quickly establishing yourself when arriving in a new destination.

Moving to a new city can be overwhelming, whether it’s for a week or a month. Here are seven tips I’ve learned from dozens of city changes:

1. Find Your Neighborhood First

Don’t just book accommodation in the cheapest area. Spend your first few days walking around different neighborhoods to find where you feel comfortable. Your daily experience depends heavily on your local area.

2. Get a Local SIM Card Immediately

Internet reliability varies, and you’ll want mobile data as a backup. Get a local SIM on day one - it’s usually cheap and saves you from scrambling during your first video call.

3. Scout Workspaces Early

Don’t wait until you have a deadline to find where you’ll work. Visit several cafes and coworking spaces in your first week to identify backup options.

4. Establish a Routine Quickly

The excitement of a new place can disrupt your productivity. Set up a routine within the first few days - regular wake time, workout, and work hours.

5. Join Local Communities

Look for digital nomad meetups, language exchanges, or hobby groups. Having a social network makes a huge difference in your experience and can provide local insights you won’t find online.

6. Learn Basic Local Phrases

Even in English-speaking cities, making an effort with local language or slang goes a long way. It shows respect and often opens doors.

7. Have an Escape Plan

Know where the nearest quiet place is - a library, quiet cafe, or park. When you need to escape noise or crowds, having a go-to spot is invaluable.

Every city is different, but these principles have helped me settle in quickly no matter where I land.
